The County of Hawaii Animal Control and Protection Agency is seeking a staff Veterinarian for a full time one year contract position. This position has potential for a permanent position
Duties Summary:
Under the agency of Animal Control and Protection and in coordination the agency administrator and with the other agencies within the county, provide veterinary care and services for all animals under the care of the county; performs educational outreach to the public and supports the mission of the county and the agency.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for providing veterinary care and service animals under the care and responsibility of the county of Hawai?i; possessing formal education to the minimum of a doctorate level in veterinary medicine; providing a variety of services to all types of species including domestics, hoofstock, and exotic animals.

Work under the Animal Control and Protection Agency to manage animal facilities and agency needs withing the county of Hawai?i to facilitate animal health and animal welfare.
In coordination with the administrator of animal control and protection agency provide veterinary services on sick or injured animals received in the care of the county under the agency’s facilities.
Perform spay and neuters as needed to facilitate the adoption process for animals under the care of the Animal Control and Protection agency that are deemed adoptable.
Help train and prepare the animal care professional at animal control facilities for animal escape drills and create a readiness program.
Must be able to work a variable schedule to include weekends, holidays, emergencies, and potential overnight travel.
Works within the community to promote responsible animal husbandry for the pet industry.
Investigates, prevents, controls and eradicates infectious diseases of animals as needed for the health of the animal community within Hawai?i County.
Prepares records of animals under their care for data storage and usage.
Advises the public and department employees on matters within the field of veterinary medicine.
Conducts public outreach and educational sessions under the coordination of the Animal Control and Protection Agency.
Works with the administrator and other county agencies to build, facilitate, and execute a disaster preparedness plan for the county.
Must work with the Administrator of Animal Control and Protection to provide fiscally responsible care while providing top notch medicine to the animals under their care.
Consistently practices safe work habits including, but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment, lifting, and reporting of unsafe situations.
Has the ability to use telemedicine and video conferencing to manage cases over a long distance or after hours for functional management of cases.
Evaluates, monitors and executes preventative medicine practices for all animals under the care of the County of Hawai?i.
Works with staff to coordinate animal intakes, husbandry management and help to promote positive dispositions for animals including exit exams for shipping animals out.
Performs other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Requirements:
Training and Experience:
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited university required.
Experience or exposure to shelter medicine.
(1-3) years of experience practicing veterinary medicine in a full service practice.
Experience working with large animals; including cows, horses, sheep and goats.
Experience using remote chemical delivery equipment to include dart guns, blow pipes, and pole syringes.
Knowledge of:
Must have previous veterinary experience with all species including terrestrial mammals, birds, and reptiles. This may include post-doctoral training or a minimum of (1) year full-time practical experience.
Some experience in management of personnel and veterinary facilities is desired.
Must be able to work a variable schedule to include weekends, holidays, emergencies and potential overnight travel.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver’s license.
Must be licensed to practice Veterinary medicine within at least one US state or territory.
Must be able acquire a Hawai’i Veterinary License, USDA Accreditation certification, and DEA and NED License.
Ability to:
Work within a team environment to facilitate the goals of the agency and the county.
Follow oral and written instructions; keep records; learn and apply safety precautions involved in animals.
Coordinate and help evaluate animals in the Animal Control and Protection facilities that are deemed unadoptable to our outside partner organizations and help to facilitate euthanasia when needed either directly or indirectly with the assistance of qualified staff.

Animal Control and Protection Agency is a multi shelter agency with a growing staff and work force servicing the Big Island of Hawaii. With two shelter locations and two more planned we are working to improve the welfare, decrease overpopulation and increase the overall quality of care our island provides to its pets. Over the next few years our agency will continue to grow with capital improvement projects to renovate existing facilities and build a state-of-the-art shelter and animal care facility and purchase two more locations for better coverage for our county.
